Örebro HEMA invites all fencers the third installment of Battle of the Bridge 2019, September 13th to September 15th 2019 for tournaments in longsword, rapier and dagger, smallsword, sword and buckler and sabre!

Registration is now open! https://forms.gle/YY2SXGrhoXuuFgY96

New for this year is that we will also host one tournament for Cadets (12-14 years old) and one for Juniors (15-17 years old). Participation in these two classes will be a seperate event with a seperate registration.

We will also hos a rondel dagger competition.

The event costs 900 SEK and for that price you get to fight in a whole bunch of tournaments. We will offer three different Longsword tournaments, as well as tournaments in smallsword, sabre, sword and buckler, rondel dagger, messer and rapier and dagger! Details will be added.

Last day for registration August 20th 2019, but the spots are limited and registration is normally fast.

Our goals with Battle of the Bridge are the following:
1. Offer an event with a strong beginner focus, to balance up the many prestigious events in the Nordic region. We want this event to be a good first or second tournament, but at the same time offer good quality bouts for more seasoned fencers.
2. Work against a possible stagnation of the Nordic scene by offering a variation in both tournament setup and ruleset.
3. Give fencers a lot of bouts in the event to give great value for the money.
4. Organizing an event that’s professional and of high quality, but at the same time relaxed and friendly with a clear learning focus, rather than a prestigious event for fencers to train for.

How do we plan to achieve these four goals?
The tournaments will be fought on mats that are 4*8 meters. By cutting the normal mats in half like this we will be able to fit twice as many mats in the same hall space. We will be running this event on 5-7 mats. Using normal Nordic rules and setup for 5 mats would require a way too big staff for it to be financially reasonable for the fencers. We will instead use a system where the referee also is the judge, together with a judge. By using this system a mat can be staffed by three people (ref, judge and table) instead of ten people using a full judging staff. This will naturally mean that the quality of the calls will go down, but for us this is an acceptable tradeoff. We are trading way more quantity for a bit less quality.

The rulesets will be announced later. At least one longsword tournament will be continious fencing.

The event setup will only have one registration, menaing that you can participate in as many tournaments as you want, in whichever weapons. Registration for a tournament is done right before each tournament. However, it is important for us that this event is a communal effort, meaning that all fencers are expected to staff at least one tournament. We are very happy to get volunteers who are willing to practice their judging in a relaxed tournament enviroment and we hope that many fencers chose to help out the event by staffing more than just one tournament. The staffing will be administrated on site and we hope that this can be done in a spirit of community.

The schedule will be decided fairly close to the event and will likely be dynamic, since we don’t know the number of participants until right before the tournament starts.

All events are Bring your own steel, beside the dagger competition, which will be fough twith rubber daggers.

We will strive to have at least six person pools for as many of the pools as possible, meaning that if you lose every single fight you will still get a lot of bouts. The pools will be followed by elimination brackets.

We are renting two huge halls at Örebro University.

Just like all competitions in Sweden, members of Swedish clubs must have a competition license! Equipment must be 350 N certified.

We’re unable to offer sleeping at the venue, but Örebro has a wide range of hotels. https://no.hotels.com/search.do?resolved-location=CITY%3A1270026%3AUNKNOWN%3AUNKNOWN&destination-id=1270026&q-destination=%C3%96rebro,%20Sverige&q-rooms=1&q-room-0-adults=2&q-room-0-children=0&sort-order=GUEST_RATING
